INTRODUCTION
Your greatest adversary is:
- Not PEOPLE
- Not the DEVIL
- Not CULTURE
- Not GOD
Your greatest adversary is YOUR FLESH
TEXT
Galatians 5:16-25
I say then: Walk in the Spirit, and you shall not fulfill the lust of the flesh. 17 For the flesh lusts against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh; and these are contrary to one another, so that you do not do the things that you wish. 18 But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the law.
19 Now the works of the flesh are evident, which are: adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lewdness, 20 idolatry, sorcery, hatred, contentions, jealousies, outbursts of wrath, selfish ambitions, dissensions, heresies, 21 envy, murders, drunkenness, revelries, and the like; of which I tell you beforehand, just as I also told you in time past, that those who practice such things will not inherit the kingdom of God.
22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness, self-control. Against such there is no law. 24 And those who are Christâs have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. 25 If we live in the Spirit, let us walk in the Spirit. (NKJV)
The Works of the Flesh & Fruit of the Spirit
How do we avoid the first and develop the second? (Put these two on the same slide, but I want to bring the second line in separately)
Isaiah 45:9-12
âWhat sorrow awaits those who argue with their Creator. Does a clay pot argue with its maker? Does the clay dispute with the one who shapes it, saying, âStop, youâre doing it wrong!â Does the pot exclaim, âHow clumsy can you be?â 10 How terrible it would be if a newborn baby said to its father, âWhy was I born?â or if it said to its mother, âWhy did you make me this way?ââ 11 This is what the Lord saysâthe Holy One of Israel and your Creator: âDo you question what I do for my children? Do you give me orders about the work of my hands? 12 I am the one who made the earth and created people to live on it. With my hands I stretched out the heavens. All the stars are at my command. (NLT)
Galatians 5:17
For the flesh lusts against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh; and these are contrary to one another, so that you do not do the things that you wish. (NKJV)
Galatians 5:17
The sinful nature wants to do evil, which is just the opposite of what the Spirit wants. And the Spirit gives us desires that are the opposite of what the sinful nature desires. These two forces are constantly fighting each other, so you are not free to carry out your good intentions. (NLT)
1 Peter 2:11
Beloved, I beg you as sojourners and pilgrims, abstain from fleshly lusts which war against the soul, (NKJV)
Romans 8:7-8
For the sinful nature is always hostile to God. It never did obey Godâs laws, and it never will. 8 Thatâs why those who are still under the control of their sinful nature can never please God. (NLT)
If you let your flesh win the war within, you will never be able to please God.
Romans 7:14-24
So the trouble is not with the law, for it is spiritual and good. The trouble is with me, for I am all too human, a slave to sin. 15 I donât really understand myself, for I want to do what is right, but I donât do it. Instead, I do what I hate. 16 But if I know that what I am doing is wrong, this shows that I agree that the law is good. 17 So I am not the one doing wrong; it is sin living in me that does it. 18 And I know that nothing good lives in me, that is, in my sinful nature. I want to do what is right, but I canât. 19 I want to do what is good, but I donât. I donât want to do what is wrong, but I do it anyway. 20 But if I do what I donât want to do, I am not really the one doing wrong; it is sin living in me that does it. 21 I have discovered this principle of lifeâthat when I want to do what is right, I inevitably do what is wrong. 22 I love Godâs law with all my heart. 23 But there is another power within me that is at war with my mind. This power makes me a slave to the sin that is still within me. 24 Oh, what a miserable person I am! Who will free me from this life that is dominated by sin and death? (NLT)
Romans 7:25
Thank God! The answer is in Jesus Christ our Lord⌠(NLT)
Romans 8:1
There is therefore now no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus, who do not walk according to the flesh, but according to the Spirit. (NKJV)
APPLICATION
2 Corinthians 10:3-6
For though we walk in the flesh, we do not war according to the flesh. 4 For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal but mighty in God for pulling down strongholds, 5 casting down arguments and every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God, bringing every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ, 6 and being ready to punish all disobedience when your obedience is fulfilled. (NKJV)
John 3:6
That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit. (NKJV)
- Flesh produces flesh. Spirit produces Spirit.
- Flesh produces works. Spirit produces fruit.
- Flesh produces sin. Spirit produces holiness.
- Flesh produces death. Spirit produces life.
Galatians 6:7-9
Do not be deceived, God is not mocked; for whatever a man sows, that he will also reap. 8 For he who sows to his flesh will of the flesh reap corruption, but he who sows to the Spirit will of the Spirit reap everlasting life. 9 And let us not grow weary while doing good, for in due season we shall reap if we do not lose heart. (NKJV)
CONCLUSION
- What we feed gets stronger.
- What we focus on gets larger.
- What we listen to gets louder.
- What we pursue gets closer.
