TEXT
Galatians 5:16-19
I say then: Walk in the Spirit, and you shall not fulfill the lust of the flesh. 17 For the flesh lusts against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh; and these are contrary to one another, so that you do not do the things that you wish. 18 But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the law. 19 Now the works of the flesh are evident, which are: adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lewdness, (NKJV)

How do we avoid the first and develop the second?
The only way to deal with the flesh is to crucify it!

THE WORKS OF THE FLESH
Galatians 5:19
Now the works of the flesh are evident, which are: adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lewdness, (NKJV)
Adultery and Fornication = Sexual Immorality
Ephesians 5:3
But among you there must not be even a hint of sexual immorality, or of any kind of impurity, or of greed, because these are improper for Godâs holy people. (NIV)
1 Corinthians 6:18
Flee sexual immorality⌠(NKJV)
1 Corinthians 6:18
Run from sexual sin! (NLT)
Uncleanness
Uncleanness = Impurity
1 Thessalonians 4:7
For God did not call us to uncleanness, but in holiness. (NKJV)
2 Peter 2:10
and especially those who walk according to the flesh in the lust of uncleanness⌠(NKJV)
Lewdness
Lewdness = Sensuality
âA person who is ready for any pleasure and doesnât care what people think.â
Jude 1:4
For certain men have crept in unnoticed, who long ago were marked out for this condemnation, ungodly men, who turn the grace of our God into lewdness and deny the only Lord God and our Lord Jesus Christ. (NKJV)
Galatians 5:20
idolatry, sorcery, hatred, contentions, jealousies, outbursts of wrath, selfish ambitions, dissensions, heresies, (NKJV)
Idolatry
Anything I put before my God is an idol
Anything I want with all my heart is an idol
And anything I can't stop thinking of is an idol
And anything that I give all my love is an idol
-âClear the Stageâ by Jimmy Needham
Colossians 3:5
So put to death the sinful, earthly things lurking within you. Have nothing to do with sexual immorality, impurity, lust, and evil desires. Donât be greedy, for a greedy person is an idolater, worshiping the things of this world. (NLT)
Sorcery
Greek word for sorcery is âpharmakeiaâ
Deuteronomy 18:9-14
âWhen you enter the land the Lord your God is giving you, be very careful not to imitate the detestable customs of the nations living there. 10 For example, never sacrifice your son or daughter as a burnt offering. And do not let your people practice fortune-telling, or use sorcery, or interpret omens, or engage in witchcraft, 11 or cast spells, or function as mediums or psychics, or call forth the spirits of the dead. 12 Anyone who does these things is detestable to the Lord. It is because the other nations have done these detestable things that the Lord your God will drive them out ahead of you. 13 But you must be blameless before the Lord your God. 14 The nations you are about to displace consult sorcerers and fortune-tellers, but the Lord your God forbids you to do such things.â (NLT)
Hatred
Romans 8:7
Because the carnal mind is enmity against God; for it is not subject to the law of God, nor indeed can be. (NKJV)
Contentions
Contentions = Strife, or Discord, or Quarreling
1 Timothy 6:3-5
Some people may contradict our teaching, but these are the wholesome teachings of the Lord Jesus Christ. These teachings promote a godly life. 4 Anyone who teaches something different is arrogant and lacks understanding. Such a person has an unhealthy desire to quibble over the meaning of words. This stirs up arguments ending in jealousy, division, slander, and evil suspicions. 5 These people always cause trouble⌠(NLT)
Jealousy
James 3:13-16
If you are wise and understand Godâs ways, prove it by living an honorable life, doing good works with the humility that comes from wisdom. 14 But if you are bitterly jealous and there is selfish ambition in your heart, donât cover up the truth with boasting and lying. 15 For jealousy and selfishness are not Godâs kind of wisdom. Such things are earthly, unspiritual, and demonic. 16 For wherever there is jealousy and selfish ambition, there you will find disorder and evil of every kind. (NLT)
James 4:1-3
What is causing the quarrels and fights among you? Donât they come from the evil desires at war within you? 2 You want what you donât have, so you scheme and kill to get it. You are jealous of what others have, but you canât get it, so you fight and wage war to take it away from them. Yet you donât have what you want because you donât ask God for it. 3 And even when you ask, you donât get it because your motives are all wrongâyou want only what will give you pleasure. (NLT)
Outbursts of Wrath
Proverbs 14:17
A quick-tempered man acts foolishly⌠(NKJV)
Ephesians 4:31
Get rid of all bitterness, rage, anger, harsh words, and slander, as well as all types of evil behavior. (NLT)
Colossians 3:8
âŚget rid of anger, rage, malicious behavior⌠(NLT)
